August 5th. Bikes
|
It's worrying how major mechanical faults can creep up on you slowly so that you don't notice. For the past few weeks I've
been having increasing difficulty in steering the older trek. It feels like the steering is stiff but only when going at
speed. Today after many attempts to fix the problem I swapped the good back wheel onto the newer trek that has been in
mothballs with a puncture to its rear rode wheel (I've only got larger off-road tubes as spares). Immediately I got on the
bike it felt weird as hell I was swerving all over the place. I soon figured the problem. The old trek's steering had
become so stiff that I was putting quite a lot of effort into steering. On the newer trek with no problems in the steering
this was producing massive over-reaction. In fact with a decent bike you need only think about turning a corner for the
small subconcious adjustment in direction to be made. It just shows how severe the steering had become on the older bike.
Last month it passed its 5,000 mile birthday and that's been rough riding the whole way. I figure it needs a baring
replacement...

For a while back there this old blog ran into the ground whilst I went a wandering over to Flickr.
There's a simply outstanding amount of talent in that site, but in the end I wandered back here.
However most of the stuff from around Detroit that went to Flickr never made it to the blog so
here are a few shots that got missed...

July 26th. How not to fill a pool
|
Let's start with rule #1, don't leave an untethered hose attached to a fire hydrant.
This thing was snaking all over the road whipping back and forwards, ripping up the
turf on either side of the road and threating to put large dings into the sides of
passing vehicles.

July 25th. Lazy Sunday
|
A lazy sunday spent wandering the city. A dawn visit to belle Isle's
Scott Fountain, up to Eastern Market, on
to Hammtramick, back down to the Fort Wayne area then around to Belle
Isle, then back downtown for a coffee in campus martius.
Just gathering in the sights and sounds of the city still asleep in its
Sunday morning stillness. It's one thing I love about this
place on a slow summer sunday. Gliding along silently on the bike,
almost no-one in sight, clear blue skies and whisps of steam
rising gently in the breeze. It's like you own the whole damn place,
shambles, ruins, glory and all.

ps. Whilst taking these shots a guy came up to me and told me about the history of the Dodge Fountain, how
it was donated by Dodge's founder etc. Only the Dodge fountain is in Hart Plaza ... hmm.
