November 22nd, Happy Thanksgiving 2007
|
Despite a puncture to some heretofore indestructable Armadillo tires I managed to make the parade on time this year.
But damn it was cold. Maybe not as cold as 2005 when it was glacial, but certainly cold enough for a Dickensian winter feel with lightly blowing snow. Crowds were OK, but it did seem that the
cold and prediction of rain thinned things out towards the Larned end of the route where it was packed 8 deep last year and empty this year. Still, a great tradition.
Also this weekend sees the long long long awaited reopening of the DIA. When I arrived here in 2004 the DIA had already been pulled back to its central area and the majority
of its american collection mothballed. So I've been waiting for coming up to 4 years to see it. Tomorrow (Friday 10am) through Saturday (6pm) the DIA will be open for a 32hr
straight run. I'm thinking of maybe trying to get in around 5am Saturday. We'll see ...

November 11th, We do it all for you

No kidding. The Detroit curfew means that if you're 15 or under you can be ticketed for being out after 8pm or before 6am.
Particularly if the party you end up at becomes a crime scene. Still, this is not quite the usual brand of prozac-laced marketing McD's usual supply.

November 2nd, Marching Bands
|
Riding through a back alley somewhere behind the Milner Hotel about dawn on Saturday. Suddenly
the whole alley erupts with an unearthly crashing. Then out of the darkness stride a fully
dressed marching band. It was all I could do to swerve and get the hell out of there.
Ah, the horror. Marching bands creeping up on you out of back alleys. There has to be some kind of a law!
Anyway, it turns out there's a Michigan marching bands competition this weekend at Ford Field.
So every band from around the state must have been trying to find their own little practice
spot back among the trash cans and crack alleys downtown. And all in full uniform. Shudder. I've got
some shots I'll try and throw up later. In the meantime, Campus Martius is being transformed,
the ice is going down and the christmas tree going up, winter's a coming. Just this week our
first mild frosts and a chance f flurries next week.
