November 6th, Devil's Eyes
CBC's Radio 2 Morning is the best wake-up radio show I've found since the demise of Detroit's old 106.7 FM.
Tom Allen presents a challenging mix of cross-genre music. Although I preferred his previous classical format,
he pulls off the new show with his usual engaging enthusiasm.
This in turn has led to other CBC shows including
the evening commute show from Rich Terfry. Rich's show is quite something else.
He has a deep involvement in modern music as rapper (Buck 65), producer, poet, director, you name it. Consequence ... like Tom Allen he
knows his music. The shows are streamed live from CBC here.
Browsing through YouTube I happened across one of Rich Terfry's award winning videos (below).
A whole heap of photographic, obscure audio and
wonderful film references packed in here. I need to hit wikipedia ...

November 5th, In the Early Morning Hours
A long night but worth waiting up for.
Happy Guy Fawkes.

October 30th, The Prices they Keep a Rising
To paraphrase Jib Jab 'The Prices they Keep a Risin'. A small loaf of
Avalon bread bought at Harbortown on E Jefferson for almost $7. With the departure of Farmer Jack's, the absence of any national superstore chain in Detroit
has left small stores such as Harbortown Market and Zaccaros' to decide the premium customers will pay not to drive past 8 mile. The result is a
sometimes steep price differential between downtown and comparable suburb stores such Trader Joe's in GP and Westborne in RO.

October 23rd, We live In Interesting Times
October 19th, Free Press/Flagstar Detroit-Windsor Marathon 2008
Another beautiful Autumn morning in Michigan. A little cool with temperatures at most in the high 30s (3C) but feeling quite a bit lower - nothing a brisk run wouldn't help.
This year we have some major changes to Detroit-Windsor Marathon route (check out 2007, 2006) due to the gateway project that cuts off
MexicanTown and the extended earmark, sorry, Riverwalk beyond Chene park.
| Sunday morning and the moon is still in the sky as we rise early to hit the 7.00am start. But the lights in GM are already on, lately they don't seem to sleep! |
| The Marathon uses the riverwalk behind the Omni for the first time
| | David Cheruiyot, the male lead at this stage & winner, is a good minute ahead of the next runners |
| | The usual bands gather to provide musical support |
| | Tetyana Byelovol, the female lead & winner, is also well ahead at this point |
| | Teams of volunteers wrapped up against the autumn morning provide water |
| Many parts of the route have been resurfaced no doubt saving many a sprained ankle. 515 Greg Wieczorek of Ontario and 2663 Lewis Butler of Arlinton (VA) |
| | Colin Sangster (L) of Windsor and Scott Setzke (R) of Wyandotte make great time along Atwater |
| | On Belle Isle the fall foliage is striking |
| | As the pack hit the 22 mile point fatigure begins to show |
| | But all along the route there is musical support |
| The final few miles along Lafayette now shows the new Greektown casino near the finish line |
| In the SP the leaves are approaching their peak - a beautiful time of year to show off downtown, Windsor and BI. |
September 29th, Tipping Point?
September 20th, Tour de Troit 2008
Another good turnout for this year's TdD on a perfect September morning for a ride around the city (See also 2007).
| | Usual time - usual place - September before the MCD. |
| As usual I'm half tempted to run the tour, but as it covers most of my daily work rides and weekend routes ... ahh, maybe next year ... |
| The changing ownership of the cafe means a registration tent this year |
| Panoramic by the fixit point (where was the BackAlley banner?) Click for a zoom |
| | The leaders await the start |
| | And led by its police escort ... |
| | ... the tour starts to stream down Michigan |
| A long ride with an extdned pack ... I hope the folks I found confused at Brush & Mack were able to reunite with the tour!! |
