Storm Special

With humidity in the 80% range and temperatures in the 80-90s the midwest has seen some serious damage-causing storms recently. Friday evening was Detroit's turn. Weather radar showed a line of severe thunderstorms with embedded tornadoes moving rapidly across Michigan.

By about 6pm Tornado warnings were in effect for Detroit and fans at Comerica Park waiting for the 7pm start were evacuated from the upper levels to shelter beneath the stands. Only a few minutes earlier downtown was experiencing clear sky and hot muggy weather. But over the course of 10 minutes the wind rose and a line of cloud started to darken the sky.

The line paralleled the river and behind the front was a constant sheet of lightning and boiling cloud.

This was already dumping flooding rain into the northern suburbs blocking arterial freeways throughout the city.

Hitting downtown it looked like a sheet was being pulled over the city as the torrential rain came down. Already DTE were being run of their feet with downed power cables, DWSD were trying to work with DFD to fix widespread flash flooding, DTW airport was closed for a short period and the DPD were having their usual Friday night fun.

You can see by the flags just how strongly the wind was pushing the clouds across. Where these began to twist, tornadoes fell out of the sky in a line on either side of Detroit. Shortly after grabbing the shot below both flapoles were hit by lightning.

Heading indoors lightning started to hit all around in a constant strobing light with crashes of thunder.

Fox2 was sticking with the weather authority, showing the location of twisters, and taking reports from Sherrifs and reporters around the Detroit metro area.

A good time to just stick it out inside and keep findgers crossed that no one would be injured by the storm. To date I see no reports of injuries probably because the tornado warnings went out very promptly. Tigers eventually began thair game against the Yankees at 11.05 pm, playing into the early morning hours to grab a much needed win driven home by Carlos Guillen.
